Today is the final 2015 Reading Challenge. It’s been one heck of a journey. Next week I’ll be writing a retrospective of my reading year and how I felt the challenge went, and also talking about where I’ll be going next with all this. For now, on to my last book.
Drag Hunt by Pat Kelleher is set in the Abaddon Gods and Monsters universe (which I think no longer exists sadly). In this universe all the Gods and monsters have been locked into our dimension. We can’t see them unless they allow it but we sometimes get caught up as collaterol damage in their schemes and that’s what happens in Drag Hunt.
Richard Green has lost his girlfriend and his job, not unusual considering his town is having a pretty bad time of it (which is relevent to the plot in a marvellous way). On the advice on a friend (and whilst drunk of course) he buys a ticket to Las Vegas in an attempt to grab life by the balls (so relevant).
He ends up, of course, losing everything, but not because he’s reckless all by himself. No. Richard ends up a victim of the trickster God Coyote. Luckily for Richard, Coyote has his own problems – his younger brother has been stolen. Nope, not his sibling: his penis. Yep. You read that right. So Richard gets sent back to run into Coyote by another God and ends up dragged along in the hunt for Coyote’s penis.
Said penis is being used by some of the other Gods in a scheme to try and bring back their godly glory on Earth, which will kinda destroy everything, so has to be stopped. This novel is a short, fast, funny and rather clever romp with terrific characters. I really enjoyed reading it, and I think it’s a great shame Pat didn’t get to write more books in this universe.
They would have been great.
